Alabama Neurology and Sleep Medicine was founded in 1986 and has grown into one of the largest neurology and sleep practices in the region. Our services encompass Neurology, Sleep Medicine, Electrodiagnostics, EEG Diagnostics, and Clinical Trials.
Neurology
We specialize in neurology, which is the branch of medical science concerned with the various nervous systems in the human body. Neurologists are highly trained specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the brain and spinal cord diseases, as well as peripheral nerve and muscle diseases.
Effective Treatment Regimens
Regardless of whether the patient was born with a neurological disorder or acquired it through an illness, accident, or upon growing older, our process always begins with an initial assessment and testing. This thorough and necessary step enables us to best determine a customized treatment regimen. The treatment that we will prescribe may include medications, occupational therapy, physical therapy, recommending an evaluation from a surgeon, or coordination with other specialist physicians. Sleep Medicine
Sleep disorders are associated with heart disease, stroke, cognitive disorders, depression, obesity, and lower life expectancy. Over seventy million people suffer from chronic, severe sleep disorders in the United States. These include difficulties sleeping at night, problems with excessive daytime sleepiness, or other medical problems that may occur or be exacerbated during sleep. Our program consists of three separate sleep disorders centers as well as the Behavioral Sleep Medicine program. For detailed information to prepare for your appointment, review Planning Your Visit.
Electrodiagnostics
Neurodiagnostic lab services available for both inpatients and outpatients include:
- Electromyograms (EMG): A procedure to evaluate the electrical activity of muscles and their associated nerves.
- Evoked Potentials (EP): Measures your brain’s electrical activity in response to external auditory (hearing), visual (vision), or electrical (sensory) stimuli.
- Nerve Conduction Velocity Studies (NCV): Measures the results of an electrical impulse through one of your nerves to assess nerve damage or injury.
EEG
EEG lab services available for both inpatients and outpatients include:
- Electroencephalogram (EEG): An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a procedure that measures the electrical activity in the brain. An EEG is done by placing small sensors (electrodes) on a person’s scalp to detect the electrical activity of the brain. The types of EEGs available include:
- Routine EEG: Awake, sleep, and sleep-deprived
- Ambulatory EEG: Portable monitor you take home with you for 24 to 72 hours
- 4- or 8-hour EEG with video
- Long term EEG and video monitoring: Inpatient study at the hospital
