“Alabama Neurology and Sleep Medicine was founded in 1986 and has grown into one of the largest neurology and sleep practices in the region. Our team consists of six neurologists and sleep professionals. Our staff includes physicians with fellowship training in neuromuscular disease, sleep medicine, epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology. Subspecialty credentialing includes neurology, sleep medicine, neuroimaging, clinical neurophysiology, and EEG.
Last year we had over 25,000 patient encounters, in the inpatient and outpatient settings. We performed over 3,500 electrodiagnostic studies and 3,300 sleep studies.
Our sleep program includes three fully accredited sleep centers as well as one of the few accredited Behavioral Sleep Medicine training programs in the United States.”
Meet Our Staff
Jenna Cooper CRNP
Jenna Cooper, CRNP has over 23 years of combined experience in healthcare. She is the director of clinical services for a multicenter sleep program. Jenna has a broad background in health care, beginning as an intensive care nurse. She has served as a practice administrator for an internal medicine group; run a nurse practitioner service, which she founded; and helped develop and run a geriatric care program associated with several long-term care facilities. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Alabama and a Master of Science in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Jenna has coauthored articles on sleep team development and care management programs. She prioritizes time with her family and enjoys spending time outdoors.
Tom Emig MD
Dr. Thomas Emig finished medical school in 1993 at Wake Forest University and completed his neurology residency at UAB in 1997. He served as a staff neurologist in the US Air Force for four years before joining ANSM in 2001. He specializes in general neurologic care. He and his wife have four children. He enjoys outdoor activities and motorcycling.

James Geyer, MD is board certified in neurology and sleep medicine and is the director of the Sleep Program at Alabama Neurology and Sleep Medicine; he directs several sleep centers in Alabama. He started the sleep program from scratch including the behavioral sleep medicine training program and the sleep centers. The program has grown to three sleep centers with a total staff of 34. The office practice is the largest private neurology practice in the state. Dr. Geyer completed a fellowship in sleep medicine at the University of Michigan after finishing residency in neurology at University of Alabama, Birmingham, where he was chief resident in his final year. His undergraduate training was in biomedical and electrical engineering at Duke University, and he did postgraduate work in biomedical engineering at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. He has authored over 100 journal articles and book chapters and has edited several textbooks including Clinical Sleep Disorders. His outside interests primarily revolve around his family.
Brian Hogan MD

Dr. Hogan joined Alabama Neurology and Sleep Medicine in 2001. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama and medical degree from UAB. He completed neurology residency at UAB in 2001 where he served as chief resident in his final year. He practices outpatient general neurology with a broad range of interest including the emerging new treatment options for migraine. He enjoys sports, running, travel and community arts.
Art Otero MD

Art Otero practices general neurology and neuromuscular disease at Alabama Neurology and Sleep Medicine. He completed his bachelor’s degree at Florida Atlantic University and earned his MD from the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo Dominican Republic. He completed his neurology residency at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Dr. Otero then completed a fellowship in Neuromuscular Disease with Dr. Shin Oh at UAB. He is active in the rural health outreach program and has staffed clinics in Fayette and Carrollton, and previously in Demopolis. Dr. Otero and his wife live in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In addition to practicing medicine, he enjoys spending time engaging in outdoor activities.
Thomas Patton MD

Thomas Patton practices general neurology at Alabama Neurology and Sleep Medicine. He completed his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Birmingham Southern College and earned his MD from the University of Alabama, Birmingham. He completed his intern year and neurology residency at Vanderbilt University, where he was chief neurology resident in his final year. Dr. Patton is always looking to support community programs that benefit his patients. He continues to be involved with Caring Days (day program for dementia patients), and most recently, he was instrumental in bringing the Rock Steady Boxing program to Tuscaloosa to benefit patients with Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Patton and his wife live in Tuscaloosa, Alabama with their two sons. In addition to practicing medicine, he enjoys spending time engaging in most any outdoor activity including running, hiking, and fishing. He is active in the community including at First Presbyterian Church.
